12 Months

As I sit here tonight and reflect on the past twelve months, I think about how our reality has changed. I think about all the amazing women who have helped me accept this reality. I think about all the things that I have learned about God, and His love for me.

In the morning it will mark the 1 year anniversary from when Morgan had her surgery. We traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio for the longest, loneliest two weeks of my life. For twelve long days, Morgan and I sat in a hospital room where we knew no one. But we knew that we were in the best possible place for her at that time. We left Scott and Cerise behind. That was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but it was also the best thing for Morgan, and now she has the best possible chance of living a normal life.

I know that to many of you reading this post, this particular surgery is nothing compared to what you have had to deal with with your own sweet children, and that makes you heroes in my eyes. I don't think that I could go through what many of you have, and do everyday. That is why God gave me the challenges He did, because they were ones He knew that I could handle. Morgan had a Posterior-Sagital-Ano-Rectal-Vaginal-Plasty. This was because she was born with a very rare ano-rectal malformation. She did not have Imperforate Anus, but she did have a fistula. She does deal with constipation worse than any I had ever imagined possible. That is part of the reality that has changed for us.

Going into this surgery, we were convinced that once she was fixed, that was it. We may deal with a little constipation, but nothing that a little jar of prunes wouldn't fix, and nothing that would really effect us until she needed to potty train. WRONG. Instead, my baby girl has to take a dose of laxatives equivalent to almost 3 squares of exlax. She takes almost twice a normal adult dose every day. What happens if she doesn't take it? She cries, and strains, and screams in pain because she can't poop. And when she does, she cries and screams because it hurts so bad. Then, if the poop sits on her bum for more than about 5 minutes, it blisters. I'm not talking a little blister, I am talking you stayed outside in 100 degree weather with no shirt and now your back has huge blisters and it hurts for days, blisters. And then she has to sit on those blisters, and the acidic urine gets on them, and she cries, in obvious agony. I cry with her. I wish that I could help her. I wish that I could take her pain upon myself, because she certainly doesn't deserve it. This is our new reality. And while I know it makes her stronger, it still makes me ache for her. Her pain tolerance is so high. She rarely cries in pain, unless her bottom is involved. I wish for her that she didn't have to endure these things, but she does.

And through all of this, I still know that God knows her. He knows her pain. He knows my pain. He loves her. He gave her this trial because she is strong enough for it. She can endure things that would have me rolled in the fetal position crying, because she is strong. And because she needs to be strong, I have to be strong. This is making me stronger. It is making me a more compassionate person.

I know this post has been rather rambling, and I am sorry for that, and it is far more depressing than anything I usually write, I usually reserve the serious side of myself for my closest family, but I want others to know what an amazing child my baby girl is. I also wanted to put a shout out to all the other IA moms, who are struggling with 10 times the issues, that I deal with. You all have been an amazing support to me, and I am grateful for your wisdom and kindness. So, here are some pictures of Morgan during our stay in Cincy 1 year ago.

Out of the Mouths of Babes...

Cerise was dancing around singing the following:
"A lady is not a lady unless she's pretty."

Scott said, "A lady is not a lady unless she's pretty?"

To which Cerise replied:
"Yes, and a man is not a man unless he's UGLY!"

I have no idea what prompted all of that.

Oh, the funniest things come out of her mouth sometimes. I just love her.

Sucked in to the Trend

I've seen this on several of the blogs I follow, and I wasn't going to do it, but then I HAD to comment on my friend Calise's so now I have to post this on my own blog. Maybe it will even be fun.

Leave a comment on my blog of a memory that you and I have had together. It doesn't matter if you've known me for a short time, or a long time, anything you remember!
Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you.
If you leave a comment, I will do the same on your blog, and if you don't have a blog, we can email :) And if you have never commented, do it now so we can play "trip down memory lane".

Even Smarter than Before

I just decide to try this again to see if I've gotten smarter or dumber, and lo and behold, I've gotten smarter.

If you recall, last time I did this, it said my blog was at a college (undergrad) level. I'm movin' up in the world. Next thing you know, I'll be a genius!!!

Back in a Flash

Well, I will be heading off to girl's camp in the morning. For those of you who don't know, the girls in our church (ages 12-18) go on a week-long campout every summer. This summer it is only 12 and 13 year-olds since the older ones went on a pioneer trek earlier this summer.
Anyway, I was called and asked to be a recreation couselor at this year's camp. So, bright and early tomorrow morning I will be heading into the woods to camp. It will be an adventure as I have only camped twice since marrying Scott (he's more of a hotel kind of guy). I will be back on Friday afternoon. Scott is leaving on Tuesday to go to Baltimore for a conference for work. He will be gone until Saturday. The girls are spending the week with one of Grandma's friends for a couple of days and then the rest of the week with Grandma. So, there will be no posts until at least Saturday. Hope you all have a great week.

Here he comes!

Scott recieved the following letter yesterday:

Dear Mr. O’Connor:

NEI is honored to extend an offer to you to participate in the nuclear energy industry’s new speakers’ bureau, the Clean Energy America program.

As you know, this program will showcase some of our industry’s finest emerging talent in speaking tours before college campuses and similar venues. You were selected from a field of 66 candidates nominated by 24 companies. The quality of these candidates was consistently high and posed a real challenge in making our final selections.

Sincerely,
**********

I can't say how proud I am of him in earning this honor, first for being nominated by his company and then for being one of the 12 people, nation-wide to be accepted. He is very excited to be able to recieve specialized public speaking training and then to promote the concept of nuclear energy. It is something that he is very passionate about.

P.S. The picture is of him and a girl, also from his company, who was chosen.

Found!!

The girls and I came home from babysitting today to find Scott home with Keyni. Apparently he got stuck inside a gated fence in a nursery RIGHT ACROSS the STREET from us. They said they called teh number on the tag several times, then they were really smart and called the vets number from his rabies tag. The vet looked up the record number and found Scott's work number and called him. So, keyni is now singing..."I once was lost, but now I'm found." Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts sent our way. We know they helped a lot.

LOST!

Our dear dog Keyni is lost. Scott let him out to the bathroom when we got home from swimming today, and when he went to let him in, he wasn't on his chain. We have looked and looked, but we can't find him. The worst part is that we haven't changed his tags since we moved, so the phone number on his tag has been disconnected, so even if someone found him, they can't contact us. Cerise is worried sick. She will be heartbroken if we can't find him. Please pray with us that we will be able to find him, or that he will come home soon.

Happy 4th of July!!!

We had a great 4th of July. We went to a parade and then to a park with our friends the Barfuss's. Cerise had tons of fun, but Morgan wasn't so sure of the whole thing.

Then, after lunch, we went swimming at Grandma's apartment pool, which is much less crowded than ours. The girls had tons of fun swimming, and Cerise even got brave enough to jump in (after we bribed her with a Blizzard). I even took my brace off and jumped in with my clothes on. It was fun.

Here are a few other random pics from the past couple of weeks:
